Eileen Gray not only created some of the most important furniture classics of the 20th century, she also had her own studio where carpets were produced according to her designs: masterpieces of abstract textile art made of 100% pure new wool, hand-knotted and processed to the highest quality. Designed for the salon of her Villa E1027, the Centimetre Carpet highlights the number 10 with a mysterious code – a nod to the tenth letter of the alphabet: J for Jean Badovici, with whom she designed the Villa Maison au Bord de Mer E1027. Numbers and icons – like fragmentary elements of everyday objects – can be found in Eileen Gray’s carpet designs from the late 1920s. They are references to her wide-ranging interests that she encountered in her creative life.
