THONET S 220 FDRW Office chair
The iconic shapes of the 214 and 209 bentwood chairs served as inspiration for the design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility: the S 220 is a material-efficient, stackable chair made of moulded plywood with an ergonomic seat shell and a lightweight tubular steel frame. With optional armrests, the chair can be used in a variety of settings – from private homes to the contract sector – and is available in a variety of wood types and colours. The chair’s design pushes the boundaries of what is technically possible with the material moulded plywood, which has always been a driving force behind innovation at Thonet. The S 220 has an understated organic shape and precise lines, and the moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive. The chair’s elegant hourglass shape ensures that the seat shell has just the right amount of resilience. A smoothly rounded front edge perfectly embodies the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that characterises the S 220. This “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, makes the seat more comfortable and takes up the radii of the tubular steel frame.
