Thonet S 32 VL lounge chair
The Thonet S 32 Lounge Chair is a design by the German designer Marcel Breuer. The lounge chair is derived from the iconic S 32 Chair, one of the first 'Freischwinger models' in furniture history, designed in 1927. The design was a reaction to Mart Stam's tubular steel construction, which was completely innovative in the 1920s. From 1925, Mart Stam experimented with gas pipes, which he connected with flanges. From this he developed the principle of the cantilever chair that no longer stands on four legs: an important construction principle in modern furniture history. Initially, the spring effect was not so important to Stam. He focused more on the clean design that fit perfectly into the modern buildings of that time. The S 32 is also a classic that emerged from the Bauhaus period and still serves as an icon in modern interiors.
