THONET 218 DINING CHAIR

Originally manufactured in 1876, model No. 18, characterised by its striking “hairpin” backrest, returns to the Thonet portfolio with a renewed identity as 218. This reintroduction retains the chair’s clear and minimalist aesthetic. Alongside chairs No. 14 and No. 56, chair No. 18 stood out as one of Thonet’s bestsellers. Recognised as Gebrüder Thonet’s “export chair”, it found popularity in restaurants and cafés, particularly in South America. Notably, it could be efficiently dismantled into individual parts, with 36 chairs fitting into a shipping crate, making it easy to transport large quantities on long voyages. No. 18, now reinvented as model No. 218, is once again being produced in Frankenberg.
